What to Expect

Hikes Mount Kilimanjaro 6 Days Machame Route the treks begin on the south-west of Mount Kilimanjaro at Machame gate. The route takes six days minimum to complete, though seven days is often really helpful.

  • You Will Hike Very, Very Slow
  • “Pole, pole,” they will say. That means, “slow, slow,” in Swahili. For speed-freak hikers like me, it can be torturous to trek like a tortoise. But honestly, it is for the best.
  • Every climb I’ve ever done prior had been self-supported. Just some friends and I with crazy plans, unwavering optimism, and pure determination. No guides and no porters. This time was different. Way different!
  • You can’t climb Kilimanjaro without going with a guided expedition company. That is unless you’ve got Red Bull or the like cutting through the red tape to give you special permission to speed-climb to the top and roll down it in a Zorb ball or something. Generally, you will go with a guide company. It’s a good thing really. The mountain is better controlled and stays much cleaner that way. And these guys have it dialed in!
  • Take The Time To Learn
  • You’ll have a lot of time hiking. Use it to learn about everything! There’s no better way to pass time on the trail than asking questions, trading stories, and getting to know the people and place better. Learn about your expedition mates if you didn’t know them before the trek. Ask questions and get to know your guides. How long has he been guiding for? Was he a porter prior? How many times has he been to the top? What is his family like? What motivates him and what are his future aspirations?
  • Don’t Forget…
  • I won’t go too deep into what to bring or not to bring because I posted the entire packing list before leaving for climbing Kilimanjaro…

Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate takes about 45 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is found on the lower slopes of the mountain.

We depart the park gate and rehearse the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations, the trails are often muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are an honest idea here. We continue a quick distance until we reach Machame Camp.

Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which matches the Arrow Glacier. We now continue right down to the Barranco Camp. Although you finish the day around the same elevation as once you began, today is extremely important for acclimatization and may help your body steel itself against summit day.

Distance: 10km/6mi
Walking Time: 5-6 hours

We continue up to the Barafu Camp. you’ve completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp with views of the summit within the space.
Elevation: 4000m/13,000ft to 4700m/15,350ft
Distance: 9km/6mi
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: BLD

Day 7Barafu Camp to Summit, right right down to Mweka Camp

Very early within the morning (midnight to 2 am), we continue ours because of the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. this is often the foremost mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point, you’ll stop for a quick rest and may be rewarded with the foremost magnificent sunrise you’re ever likely to determine. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.

From Stella Point, you’ll encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak you’ve reached the absolute best point on Kilimanjaro and thus the continent of Africa!

From the summit we start our descent by continuing straight right down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. you’ll be wanting gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel happening. We reach Mweka Camp and luxuriate in our last evening on the mountain.
Elevation: 4700m/15,350ft to 5895m/19,340ft
Down to 3090m/10,150ft
