Trek the Umbwe route starts its approach of the summit from the south. the whole route may be a short, steep, and direct climb.

After reaching Barranco Camp, the trail turns east and takes trekkers below Kilimanjaro’s Southern ice mass on a path referred to as the Southern Circuit.

The Umbwe Route is widely considered the toughest trail, a troublesome vertical slog through the jungle, in places using the tree roots as makeshift rungs on a ladder. due to the high risks involved sleeping at Arrow Glacier camp and summiting via the Western Breach, all our Umbwe route hikes are re-routed, to hitch with the Machame route from night 2 on the mountain.

On special request, we will assist with Umbwe route hikes attempting to summit using the Western Breach/ Arrow Glacier path and overnight at the Crater camp. Please note this will only be arranged through our higher quality Standard packages and a supplement rate will apply. the most itinerary difference between the Umbwe 6 day and 7-day routes is that the additional acclimatization day at Barranco camp.

Approaching from the south, the Umbwe route may be a short, steep, and direct climb. After reaching Barranco Camp, the trail turns east and traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern ice mass on a path referred to as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. The descent is formed via the Mweka route.
