The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its diverse landscapes and high success rate, it offers a challenging yet rewarding experience for trekkers.

The Machame Route typically takes 6 or 7 days to complete. The 7-day itinerary is highly recommended as it allows for better acclimatization, increasing the chances of reaching the summit. The route begins at the Machame Gate, situated in the lush rainforest on the southern slopes of the mountain.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp. The trek starts with a steady climb through the dense rainforest. The trail can be muddy and slippery, but the vibrant greenery and the sounds of the forest make for an enchanting start. You’ll reach Machame Camp in the late afternoon, where you’ll spend your first night on the mountain.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp. As you leave the rainforest, the landscape transitions into the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper and more rocky, offering stunning views of the Shira Plateau and the Kibo peak in the distance. Shira 2 Camp is located on a high plateau, providing a great vantage point for sunset.

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower. This is a crucial day for acclimatization. You’ll climb to the Lava Tower at 4,630 meters before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,960 meters. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to the altitude. The descent into the Barranco Valley offers spectacular views of the Barranco Wall.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp. The day begins with a scramble up the Barranco Wall, which is less daunting than it looks. Once at the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views before trekking across ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows for further rest and acclimatization.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp. The trail continues through the alpine desert zone, becoming increasingly barren and rocky. You’ll reach Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt, in the afternoon. It’s essential to rest and prepare for the long night ahead.

Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and down to Mweka Camp. The summit attempt begins around midnight. The climb is steep and mentally challenging, but reaching Stella Point at sunrise is a momentous occasion. From there, it’s a final push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll begin the long descent to Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. The final day is a gentle descent through the rainforest to the Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates.

The Machame Route is a truly unforgettable journey, offering a perfect blend of challenge and beauty. With proper preparation and a positive mindset, you can conquer the roof of Africa.
